Arsenal ( Russian Арсенал , also published under the name January Uprising in Kiev 1918 ) is a 1928 film directed by Oleksandr Dowschenko . The film premiered on February 25, 1929 in Kiev and on March 26, 1929 in Moscow .

Dowschenko's third feature film is set in the Russian Civil War . The revolutionary film heroizes the uprising in the Kiev arms factory " Arsenal " (Завод Арсенал) during the January 1918 uprising against the bourgeois-national government of Ukraine.

After Les Kurbas made a film about the storming with " Арсенальцы " in 1925, Dowschenko began his film on the same subject two years later, also based on the - now significantly revised - script by Mykola Patlach. The film Arsenal is considered to be one of the most important films in Ukrainian cinema.

The film was restored in 1972 at the Mosfilm film studio . The score of Igor Belsa's film music from 1929 could no longer be found. The premiere of a 2017 digitally restored version from the Austrian Film Museum took place on November 12, 2017 in the Komische Oper Berlin . The orchestra of the Komische Oper accompanied the performance with music by Alexander Grebtschenko, newly written in 2017 . The television channel arte showed this digitally restored and newly set version of the film in its first broadcast on the night of November 23, 2017.
