Artch is a Norwegian power metal band from Sarpsborg , which was founded in 1983, dissolved in 1993 and re-formed in 1999.

history

The band was founded in January 1983 by guitarist Cato André Olsen and bassist Bernt Jansen. A year later, guitarist Geir Nilssen and drummer Jørn Jamissen from the band Oxygen joined the group. Together they recorded some demos and self-made music videos in May 1985; Compared to their early days, the band became much more professional according to Metalion , as he notes in his report on their performance on March 8, 1985 (when the band had built a medieval castle around the stage). During this time, the band was also looking for a suitable singer, as they were not satisfied with the then singer Lars Fladeby.

In the summer of 1985 they found a suitable singer in Espen Hoff. However, he had a fatal accident with his motorcycle in October 1985 when he was on the way to the band rehearsals.

After a month the band found a new singer in Eiríkur Hauksson . He just blew our minds when we first teamed up. The band recorded a demo that contained two songs and went to London to look for a suitable label. The band auditioned at 40 to 50 labels, but the search was unsuccessful, so the band left without a contract. In February 1987 the band reached an agreement with a local recording studio. The band helped build the studio and in return they could record an album for free. The recordings for the debut album called Another Return took place in the summer of 1987. The band reached a contract with Active Records the next year and released the album through the label that year. After that, the band reached a five-album contract with Metal Blade Records .

This was followed by a two-week tour through Norway and some gigs in Iceland . In the spring of 1990 the band began work on the next album called For the Sake of Mankind . The band recorded all the songs within a month and mixed the songs in another studio in Oslo that summer . The band had no contract for Europe , so the album was only released in the US , Japan and Norway. In addition, the band held some gigs in Norway and Iceland.

In 1991 the band disintegrated, so that at Christmas 1993 the last concert was played in their hometown for the time being.

In November 1999 the band received a call from Michael Trengert (Metal Blade Records). The two albums should be released again on the label. The band also gave a gig in Oslo.

Drummer Jørn Jamissen was no longer in the band and was replaced by Gudmund Bolsgård.

In 2001, both albums were remastered and released on Metal Blade Records. In the same year the band also performed at the Wacken Open Air .

Music genre

Artch's recordings from 1986 were described by Metalion and The Beast in Slayer as " speed with class" à la Metal Church , Metallica etc. The song Living Dream is reminiscent of Back to Back by Pretty Maids . Often the band's music is described as classical power metal, comparing the music to the works of bands like Edguy , Helloween and early pieces by Queensrÿche .
