Artemon (Koroplast)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artemon ( Greek  Ἀρτέμον ) was a Greek coroplast who lived at the end of the 1st century BC. And at the beginning of the 1st century AD in Myrina in Asia Minor.

Artemon is known for signatures on twelve clay statuettes , all of which were created in a short period of time around the turn of the century . The statuettes show an Aphrodite Pandemos, an Aphrodite riding a dolphin with Eros , three erotes from the same shape who play with a butterfly, two nikers from the same shape , a seated muse with a kithara , a banquet with two seated ones Persons and a slave with a lantern with a child on his shoulders.

With the exception of the slave's coroplasty, all statuettes were found in the necropolis of Myrina. The slave statuette, however, was found in Pergamon , which has led to the assumption that Artemon was also active there, at least for a short time. On the statuettes, which come from the same shape, Artemon's signature is depicted as a relief, i.e. already scratched into the shape, which is why Artemon's workshop is assumed. However, it is not known whether his name was used as a workshop name after his creative period.
