Arthrocereus melanurus is a species of plant in the genus Arthrocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet melanurus is derived from the Greek words "μέλας" for black and "οὐρά" and refers to the appearance of the first plants collected.

description

Arthrocereus melanurus grows basally branched with several shoots that are up to a meter or more long. The shoots are divided at short intervals, with the individual segments 10 to 40 centimeters long and 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters in diameter. The ribs are 9 to 19 low and are 2 to 3 millimeters high. There are numerous, unevenly long, golden yellow to white thorns . The up to 15 strong upper marginal and central spines are brown. The approximately 20 lower bristle-like radial spines are between 5 and 8 millimeters long.

The yellow to white flowers are up to 6 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Arthrocereus melanurus is distributed in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais at altitudes of 700 to 1700 meters.

The first description as Cereus melanurus by Karl Moritz Schumann was published in 1890. Lothar Diers , Pierre Josef Braun and Eddie Esteves Pereira placed the species in the genus Arthrocereus in 1987 . A nomenclature synonym is Leocereus melanurus (K.Schum.) Britton & Rose (1920).

The species Arthrocereus melanurus includes the following subspecies :

  • Arthrocereus melanurus subsp. odorus (F.Ritter) NPTaylor & Zappi

Arthrocereus melanurus is in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. classified endangered. The same threat status applied in 2002 to the subspecies Arthrocereus melanurus subsp. melanurus and Arthrocereus melanurus subsp. odorus . Arthrocereus melanurus subsp. magnus , on the other hand, was called " Near Threatened (NT) ". H. low risk led. In the 2010 update, the subspecies were not reassessed and removed from the red list.
