Arthur Nikisch Prize
The Arthur Nikisch Prize was a music prize from the city of Leipzig , which was awarded irregularly by the mayor from 1957 to 1989 for outstanding conducting achievements . It was donated by the Leipzig City Council in July 1957 to mark the 175th anniversary of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in recognition of the services of the Gewandhaus Kapellmeister Arthur Nikisch , who worked at the New Gewandhaus in Leipzig from 1895 to 1922 . The prize was endowed with 5000 marks and went to some international conductor personalities. On Nikisch's 102nd birthday, October 12, 1957, the first award ceremony took place during a ceremony in Leipzig's New Town Hall . The award was given to the Gewandhauskapellmeister Bruno Walter , who was expelled from Germany in 1933, and the orchestra director at the time, Franz Konwitschny . The last winner in 1989 was Kurt Sanderling .
