Arthur Houghton

Arthur Amory Houghton, III (born May 6, 1940 in New York City ) is an American numismatist who researches the coinage of the Seleucid Empire .

Houghton is the son of glass manufacturer Arthur Houghton, who worked for the Corning Glass Works , and of Ellen Crenshaw. He grew up in his native New York City. He completed his bachelor's degree at Harvard University until 1963 ; He completed his master's degree in 1966 at the American University of Beirut with a degree in Middle East Studies . Houghton then entered the US civil service and worked at the embassies in Beirut , Amman and Cairo , among others . He interrupted this activity for a master’s degree in fine arts at Harvard University, which he graduated in 1982. From 1982 to 1986 he was employed at the J. Paul Getty Museum . Then Arthur A. Houghton was again in the civil service, 1987-1989 as a member of a working group to secure the US external borders and 1989-1995 as a member of the "White House Office of National Drug Control Policy" ("Office of the White House for national drug control policy "). He then founded the consulting firm "Arthur Houghton Associates, Inc.", of which he was President. In addition, he is or was a member of various state and scientific committees.

Parallel to his professional activity, Houghton has published numerous articles and some monographs on ancient, especially Seleucid, numismatics and archeology. He is a lifelong honorary member and trustee of the American Numismatic Society (ANS), of which he chaired the Board of Trustees from 1994 to 1999. 1985 to 1989 he was President of the Society. In 2015 he received the Archer M. Huntington Award from the ANS for his work in her research field .
