Arthur B. Laffer

Arthur Betz Laffer Sr. (born August 14, 1940 in Youngstown ) is an American economist . His best-known contribution to economic discourse is the Laffer curve .

He is an advocate for supply-side economic policy and was a key member of Ronald Reagan's Economic Policy Advisory Board from 1981 to 1989 . Laffer became popular in the early 1980s primarily because of the illustration of a relationship between tax rate and tax revenue using the Laffer curve . He is said to have painted this for the first time on a napkin at a dinner in 1974. The economist adopted the basic concept from Ibn Chaldun and John Maynard Keynes .

Laffer received his BA in 1963 from Yale University , his MBA in 1965, and his PhD in 1972 from Stanford University .

Laffer is co-chair of the Free Enterprise Fund and is a member of the ALEC Board of Scholars . Richard Fink (Vice Chairman) and Wayne Gable (Managing Director), two managers from Koch Industries , sit in Laffer's own Laffer Center for Global Economic Growth ; the Laffer Center also received $  100,000 from the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation of Charles G. Koch in 2009 . In September 2015 he became an advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance and is expected to participate in a tax reform.

On June 19, 2019, US President Donald Trump awarded Laffer the Presidential Medal of Freedom .
