Arthur Irwin Beehive (born March 20, 1935 in New York City ) is an American physicist , science manager and past president of the American Physical Society .

Life

Arthur Bienenstock is the son of Leo and Lena Bienenstock, b. Senator. He studied physics at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1955 and his master's degree in 1957. He then moved to Harvard University , where he received his doctorate in applied physics in 1962. As a postdoctoral fellow, he went to the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell in Great Britain . After returning to Harvard University in 1963, he was assistant professor there until 1967 . In 1967 he moved to Stanford University and became Professor of Applied Physics and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and later Professor of Photon Science ( photonics ). From 1978 to 1997 he was director of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL) (now Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource ). The SSRL became affiliated with the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), and Beehive was deputy director of the SLAC from 1992 to 1997. In 1997 he retired from Stanford University. He then served as Associate Director of Science and Technology Policy in the White House Office until the end of President Bill Clinton's tenure .

The main focus of his scientific work was the structural investigation of amorphous materials . At the beginning of the 1970s, he was one of the pioneers who used the X-ray portion of synchrotron radiation for such examinations. His groundbreaking studies were carried out on the SPEAR storage ring of the SLAC.

In 2008, Beehive was President of the American Physical Society (APS). In 1971 he became a Fellow of the APS and in 1989 of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In 2013 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Since 2010 he has been an external member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering.

In 2018 he received the Philip Hauge Abelson Prize from the AAAS. He holds honorary doctorates from the Polytechnic University of New York (1998) and Lund University (2006).

Beehive has been married to Roslyn Doris Goldberg since 1957. The marriage resulted in two sons and a daughter.
