Arthur "Art" Dyer Tripp (also known under the stage names Ed Marimba and Ted Cactus ) (born September 10, 1944 in Athens (Ohio) ) is a former American drummer, who in particular through his work with Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart is known.

Live and act

Tripp grew up in Pittsburgh and began playing drums in school. While in high school he played in a local dance band and took percussion lessons from Stanley Leonard of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra . From 1961 he attended the College Conservatory of Music Cincinnati , where he worked with John Cage when he was artist in residence there. During his bachelor's degree in Cincinnati , he became a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra , with which he was on a world tour in 1966. In 1967 he switched to the Manhattan School of Music in New York for his master’s degree , where he came into contact with Frank Zappa and performed for him. Tripp then became a member of the Mothers of Invention , with whom he recorded seven albums and went on several tours through Europe and the United States. After the band split up, he played with Tim Buckley in September 1969 ( Live at the Troubadour 1969 ) and took part in the recordings of King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa , before switching to Captain Beefheart's Magic Band , in which he worked until 1975. With his Beefheart colleagues Bill Harkleroad and Mark Boston , he was involved in founding Mallard .

After a break between 1975 and 1978, he worked briefly as a studio musician in Hollywood, before he trained as a chiropractor from 1978 and practiced in Eureka (California) and since 2000 in Gulfport (Mississippi) .
