Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) is the 10th studio album by the American author, painter and singer of experimental rock and blues music Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band . The album was released in 1978. After the hardly noticed albums Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans & Moonbeams , the breakthrough for Beefheart followed after a creative break with Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) . The criticism reacted profusely. In particular, the piece "Owed t'Alex" was highlighted.

backgrounds

The album was originally recorded in 1976 for DiscReet Records . It was produced by Frank Zappa and was to appear under the title Bat Chain Puller . Due to legal disputes between Zappa and its manager at the time, Herb Cohen , who founded DiscReet Records with Zappa, the release was stopped and the Zappa master tapes were put under lock and key. The titles "Harry Irene", "The Floppy Boot Stomp", "Owed t'Alex" and the poem "Apes-Ma" intended for the album had already been sent to Virgin Records and to music journalists as a tape . Various bootlegs contained the titles under record names such as The Original Bat Chain Puller + Paris 1972 , Original 1976 Shiny Beast Version , Bat Chain Puller - The 1976 Sessions , and Dust Sucker . In 1978 Beefheart played the album from scratch for Warner Bros. Records with a new musical line-up, this time without the participation of Frank Zappa and Herb Cohen.
