Arthur Christensen

Arthur Emanuel Christensen (born January 9, 1875 in Copenhagen ; † March 31, 1945 in Copenhagen) was a Danish orientalist with a focus on Iranian studies (philology and folklore) and held the first professorship in oriental studies at the University of Copenhagen between 1919 and 1945.

He completed his studies with Friedrich Carl Andreas in Göttingen, husband of Lou Andreas-Salomé , and wrote his dissertation in 1903 on Omar Chajjam and his poetry (Omar Khjjâms Rubâijât, en litterærhistorisk Undersøgelse). In 1914, 1929 and 1934 Christensen traveled to Persia and then wrote articles about the people, culture and nature. In 1940 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
