Arthur Henry Mann (born May 16, 1850 in Norwich , † November 19, 1929 in Cambridge ) was a British organist and composer of hymns .

Life

Mann was a student of Zechariah Buck during his time as a choir member and assistant organist at Norwich Cathedral . In the years 1870/1871 he was organist at St. Peter's Collegiate Church ( Wolverhampton ), then until 1875 at St. Michael's Church ( Tettenhall ). Mann graduated from New College, Oxford and obtained a Bachelor of Music (MusB) in 1874 and a Doctor of Music (MusD) in 1882 . From 1876 to 1929 he was organist and music director of the Choir of King's College ( Cambridge ). He was also organist at the University of Cambridge from 1897 and from 1895 to 1922 music professor and organist at "The Leys School (Cambridge)".

Angel's Story is one of his well-known hymns , the four-part setting of which he originally composed for the song I love to hear the story . After Mann had held the office of organist in various places, he was from 1876 to 1929 music director of the Choir of King's College (Cambridge) . There he established the world-famous tradition of the A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 1918 .
