Friedrich Arthur Kötz (born February 15, 1871 in Leipzig , † 1944 in Göttingen ) was a German chemist .

Life

Kötz attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig until 1890 . After graduation, he studied chemistry at the University of Leipzig and was founded in 1894 with a thesis on contributions to the knowledge of the Benzoylenharnstoffes to Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1898 he completed his habilitation at the General Chemical Institute of the Georg-August University in Göttingen and became a private lecturer at the Philosophical Faculty. In the same year he became head of department for chemistry and chemical technology of the chemical laboratory in support of Otto Wallach . In 1903 he received the title "Professor". In 1909 he was appointed associate professor for chemistry and chemical technology. In 1920 he was proposed by Adolf Windaus as full professor and successor to Ferdinand Fischer , who resigned in 1912, but the Faculty of Philosophy refused to do this because of the alleged "lack of qualifications". In 1921 he became head of the Chemical Technological Collection (also Chemical Technological Institute) at the University of Göttingen and received a teaching position for technical chemistry . Günther Rienäcker was his successor . From 1922 to 1935 he was a full professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

In 1925 and 1932 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry .

science

Arthur Kötz held a patent on the process for the preparation of di- or tetrahydrated ketones or β-ketonic acid esters or their acids. (DRP 215 424, 1907)

He wrote numerous scientific articles and wrote the ADB biography on Friedrich Wöhler .
