Arthur MacManus (* 1889 in Belfast , † February 27, 1927 in London ) was a Scottish trade union official and communist .

origin

MacManus was the son of a working-class family who moved from Belfast to Glasgow soon after he was born . Even as a child he had to contribute to the family's income by working as a boilermaker's handyman in a shipyard. After finishing school, he completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic.

Union activities

After completing his training, he worked in a factory of the Singer company in Clydebank , where he gained his first experience in union combat. In 1911, after a large but unsuccessful strike, in which around 10,000 workers went on strike, he was dismissed because he was counted among the ringleaders of the strike. He later became a member of the Clyde Workers' Committee, a labor movement of industrial workers in the greater Glasgow area that opposed the Munitions of War Act 1915 , a law that mandated strict control over workers.

Political activities

Before founding the Communist Party of Great Britain , MacManus was a member of the Socialist Labor Party . MacManus played a key role in the founding of the Communist Party in 1920. From 1920-1927 he was chairman of the CPGB. 1921, on the III. Congress of the Comintern , MacManus was elected to its Executive Committee and Presidium.

Attitudes to individual issues

MacManus was demonstrably impressed by the rapid and profound consequences of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917. His desire to be buried at the Kremlin wall in the event of his death only underlines this.

persecution

In addition to being arrested and fired for his union activities, MacManus was also persecuted for his anti-war stance. In 1915 he was one of the speakers at an event in Glasgow against Great Britain's participation in the First World War, at which all speakers, including MacManus, were arrested when it ended.

Resting place

According to his wishes, MacManus was buried at the Kremlin wall after his death .
