Arthur Newell spotlights
Arthur Newell Strahler (born February 20, 1918 in Kolhapur , India , † December 6, 2002 ) was an American hydrologist and professor of geosciences at Columbia University . In 1952 he developed a system for classifying river networks according to the amount of water in their tributaries ( flow ordinal number according to the radiator ).
Strahler was instrumental in shifting geomorphology from a descriptive and qualitative science to a calculative and quantitative one in the mid-20th century.
He is the namesake and first author of the standard textbook called "Strahler" for various aspects of physical geography .
