The three- cushion world cup 2009/3 was the third UMB / CEB world cup tournament in the 23rd year of the three-cushion world cup. The tournament took place from June 29th to July 5th, 2009 in Matosinhos , Portugal . It was the eighth World Cup tournament in Portugal.
history
The World Cup tournament in Portugal started with a sensation. The first four of the current world rankings have never been eliminated in the first round in its 23-year history. Two Koreans, a Vietnamese and a Spaniard managed this surprise in Matosinhos. The cards in the battle for the overall World Cup were reshuffled. If Martin Horn reaches the semi-finals, he will take the lead in this classification for the first time. In the quarter-finals, however, the Korean Cho Jae-ho dashed his hope. The beneficiary of this tournament, which was marked by surprises, was the Belgian Eddy Merckx . In the final against Nikos Polychronopoulos he won with 3-2 sets and thus gave the Greek his second defeat in his second World Cup final. For Merckx it was the third World Cup victory.

The three-cushion World Cup was organized by the founding association, the "
Billiards Worldcup Association " (BWA) until 1998 . Disputes between the BWA and the world association
Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) led to parallel tournaments between 1994 and 1997. The UMB / BWA organized the tournament together until the beginning of 1999. Since the dissolution of the BWA in 1999, the UMB has been the sole organizer.
From 1988-1991 the UMB did not host any world championships. During this time, the annual overall winner of the World Cup was crowned world champion.
