Arthur Purdy Stout (born November 30, 1885 in New York City , † December 21, 1967 there ) was an American surgeon and pathologist .

Life

Arthur Purdy Stout was born the fourth son of Joseph S. Stout and his wife Julia Frances, née Purdy, in New York City. He studied at Columbia University , where he received his Medical Doctor in 1912 . At Columbia University he worked as a surgeon. He served in the American armed forces in France during the First World War . After the war he came back to Columbia University and became assistant professor of surgery there in 1921. In 1928 he became an associate professor and in 1947 a professor. In 1950 he also became a professor of pathology. In 1951 he retired from Columbia University and became director of pathology at Francis Delafield Hospital in New York City. He then retired there in 1954.

As an author or co-author, Stout published over 300 articles in various medical journals. In 1932 he published the book Human Cancer . In 1954 he and L. Whittington Gorham described a new disease in which a massive loss of bone mass ( osteolysis ) occurs. This disease is now called Gorham-Stout Syndrome after its discoverer .
