Arthur Wilhelm Unger , by mistake also Arthur William Unger (born October 2, 1870 in Vienna ; † June 21, 1945 there ), was an Austrian printer, writer, professor and councilor.

Life

Arthur Wilhelm Unger was born the son of the book printer Ignaz Unger. He worked as a printer, accountant and dispatcher in his father's book printing shop. From 1897 on he taught at the Graphic Education and Research Institute in Vienna and wrote several books on book design. One of his students was the painter and etcher Emil Singer. With his permanent retirement he was honored with the title of Government Councilor. After his retirement in 1919, Unger was general secretary of the Elbemühl printing and publishing company.

Unger converted from the Mosaic to the Evangelical faith in 1890 . From 1938 onwards he was persecuted and disenfranchised in Vienna due to the Nuremberg Race Laws. Because of the "privileged marriage" with his wife Kunigunde, he was not deported and was able to survive the end of the war. He died on June 21, 1945 in the Sophien Hospital and was buried in the Central Cemetery. After a year, an honorary grave was dedicated to him in a privileged location in recognition of his services to book culture, in which he was ecclesiastically buried on September 14, 1946. In the honor grave group 30A, row 3, no. 22, his wife Kunigunde, his son Dr. Arthur J. Unger and his wife Dorothea are buried. In his work, Famous Resting Places in Vienna Cemeteries, from 1961, Hans Markl replaced Unger's first name Arthur W. on the gravestone with the first name William, since then Arthur W. Unger has often been confused with the painter and etcher William Unger or with his son. Unger's younger brother Viktor was a professor at a secondary school and an academic painter. He died in 1938.
