from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arts & Architecture was an American magazine that appeared in California from 1929 to 1967 and covered design , architecture , landscaping, and art .

history

The magazine came out in 1929 under the title California Arts & Architecture . John Entenza joined the magazine in 1938 as an editor. In 1940, Entenza took over the role of editor and changed the focus of the magazine from eclecticism , which was widespread in California at the time, to modern architecture . In Entenza's time, the magazine, which he renamed Arts & Architecture , launched the Case Study House program, which was decisive for the development of modern architecture in California. In the course of the program, several houses were built that attracted international attention. With the support of Entenza architects such as Charles Eames , Eero Saarinen , Richard Neutra , Raphael Soriano , Craig Ellwood and Pierre Koenig, they worked in Arts & Architecture . Entenza's private home, the Entenza House , was also created in this context. Entenza revised the concept of the magazine in 1962 and handed it over to David Travers. Travers headed Arts & Architecture until hiring in 1967.

For the graphic design , the magazine hired designers John Follis , Alvin Lustig and Herbert Matter, among others . Julius Shulman worked as a photographer . Among the authors were Walter Gropius and Lewis Mumford .

The Taschen 2008 published a reprint of all issues from 1945 to 1954 with a foreword by the last publisher David Travers. In addition to the English version, the reprint was also partially translated into German.
