Artur Mkrtchjan

Artur Mkrtchjan ( Armenian Արթուր Մկրտչյան Art'owr Mkrtčyan , born February 16, 1959 , † April 14, 1992 ) was a Karabakh politician and member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF).

Mkrtchyan was considered the first head of state of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic from January 6, 1992, after he was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic.

A few weeks after his inauguration, the open Nagorno-Karabakh War began , during which Mkrtchyan worked to defend the country against Azerbaijani invaders.

He was only able to exercise his mandate for less than three months and was shot dead in front of his house under mysterious circumstances when he was 33. His successor was Georgi Petrosian .
