Arturo Hotz (born March 22, 1944 in Weiningen ZH ; † July 14, 2014 in Thun ) was a sports scientist , sports historian and sports philosopher .

education

As part of his qualification years, he trained as a qualified gymnastics and sports teacher as well as a certified trainer. He studied at the ETH Zurich , wrote his doctoral thesis (history, philosophy and media studies) at the University of Bern , completed a second doctorate in educational psychology and social pedagogy at the University of Zurich and finally completed his habilitation in 1987 at the social science faculty of the Georg-August- University of Göttingen in Sports Science for Dr. disc. pole. habil. There he was appointed adjunct professor in 1992.

At a young age he was head gymnast of the seminar gymnastics club and a versatile competitor. From 1980 to 1996, Hotz was an editorial assistant at the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) (Sport). He was national coach bobsleigh and until February 1975 briefly in alpine skiing . He worked as head of department (humanities and social sciences) at the Swiss National Science Foundation and was part-time editor of the specialist journal “Sporterbildung in der Schule”. From 1980 he embarked on an academic career.

Act

Hotz has held teaching positions in Europe, as a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck since 1991. At the trainer (training) academies in Innsbruck, Cologne, Magglingen and Rome he worked as a trainer as well as in various sports associations as well as in snow sports and swimming - and golf teacher training courses in Switzerland. He worked as a lecturer in Switzerland at the universities of Basel (1980–1982), Bern (since 1975), Lausanne (1986–1998) and St. Gallen (1998–2000) as well as at the ETH Zurich (1980–2005); As a (visiting) professor, he has lectured at the following universities since 1980: Augsburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Landau, Oldenburg, Osnabrück, Vechta and Wrocław (Breslau), especially in the areas of movement and training sciences (sport -) Didactics / methodology and (educational) psychology. At the University of Göttingen he supervised a large number of doctorates. He also taught psychology / ethics at the higher technical college for tourism in Graubünden. The WorldCat lists 253 works by him. Hotz died in 2014 after suffering from cancer.

Hotz was considered one of the “most important movement scientists” in Switzerland, and as an ethicist, Hotz's statements and essays are “of lasting importance” according to Roland Zolliker (Central President of the Swiss Karate Association).

In his career to date, Hotz has written over 30 monographs, more than 1000 essays, essays and specialist articles in curricula, encyclopedias, anthologies and specialist journals, as well as numerous instructional videos.
