description

Arum cyrenaicum is a perennial bulbous plant that reaches heights of 13 to 27 centimeters. The tuber is vertical. The petioles are round.

The inflorescence smells like horse manure. The Spatha tube is clearly two-colored on the inside with a light green to white background and a purple top. The outside is purple, there are no vertical stripes. The edge of the spathe, pink-purple to dark purple on the inside, becomes lighter at the level of the middle. The outside is light green with a narrow, purple border. The thin , club-like spadix appendage is black-purple with an olive-green sheen. The short cylindrical fruit ear measures 2.5 to 4 centimeters.

The flowering period extends from March to April.

Occurrence

Arum cyrenaicum was described from Cyrenaica and first found in Crete in 1984 . Their main occurrences in Cyrenaica extend over 200 km between Benghazi and Darna . In Crete it occurs only locally in the southwest of the island at altitudes of 30 to 570 meters. It grows in alluvial and hardwood forests, but also in more open terrain.
