Ary França

Ary França (born March 30, 1917 in São Luiz do Paraitinga , São Paulo ) is a Brazilian geographer and successor to Pierre Monbeig at the Department of Geography at the University of São Paulo .

Life

França studied from 1937 to 1940 at the Faculty of Philosophy, Science and Literature at the University of São Paulo . In 1945 he received a one-year scholarship to attend a meteorology course with Max Sorre (1880–1962) in Paris . In 1946 he received his doctorate under Pierre Monbeig at the University of São Paulo with a thesis on the climate in the São Paulo basin . Soon afterwards he filled the human geography chair at Monbeig at the same university. He returned to France, where he continued to work as an assistant to Max Sorre. In later years he was a lecturer at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas and in Presidente Prudente.

In 1961 he was the doctoral supervisor of Pasquale Petrone (* 1924), who wrote a "human geographic study" on the Ribeira basin. In 1984, together with Raul de Andrade e Silva, he translated Pierre Monbeig's book Pionniers et planteurs de São Paulo into Portuguese , published in 1952 .

On February 27, 1997, Ary França held his inaugural auditorium on "Geography and Medicine" at the Faculty of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo.
