Asad is a 2012 South African-American short film directed by Bryan Buckley .

action

The boy Asad would like to be a pirate like the older Laban, who is once again going out to sea with his troops to rob a yacht. Instead, the old fisherman Erasto tries to convince him to fish, but Asad has never caught a big catch. Erasto believes that Asad will shortly be making the catch of his life. From his current harvest he gives Asad a particularly large fish, which Asad wants to carry home. When asked repeatedly on the way home whether he caught the fish, he always said no. He is accompanied by his friend Ali, who is stopped by a group of rebels from Mogadishu on the way . In response to an inappropriate answer to one of their questions, the men threaten Ali - Asad gives them the fish to save his friend's life.

At home he learns from his mother that there will be no dinner that evening because the rebels have stolen all the food. During the night Asad goes to Erasto to go fishing with him. As Erasto was wounded by the rebels, Asad sets out alone. A large fish actually bites, but pulls Asad out to sea with his boat and then breaks free. Asad stops just in front of a drifting yacht. Inside he finds the dead Laban with the dead yacht owner. In an adjoining room, Asad discovers a white Angora cat - he has never seen such an animal and brings it ashore as a "lionfish". Erasto doesn't know what animal it is either, but congratulates Asad on catching his life. Asad carries the cat home. The animal is admired on the way. When asked whether he caught it, he now answers yes.

production

The idea for Asad was commercial director Brian Buckley when he commissioned by Microsoft toured Africa. This resulted in the documentary No Autographs , shot on behalf of the United Nations in 2010 , for which he also interviewed Somali refugees in the Kakuma refugee camp. With the exception of the dead woman on the yacht, Buckley cast Asad exclusively with Somali refugees. The credits indicate that the entire cast has lost their country, but not their hope. The two actors Harun Mohammed (Asad) and Ali Mohammed (Ali), 16 and 10 years old at the time of shooting, are siblings. Asad was filmed in the South African Paternoster in 2011 . The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2012 .

Awards (selection)

Asad won the Short Film Award at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival . The film received the Audience Award and the Short Film Award at the Austin Film Festival in 2012 and was awarded the Audience Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Asad was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Short Film in 2013.
