Asha de Vos (born 1978 or 1979) is a Sri Lankan marine biologist , ocean educator and conservationist . She is a pioneer of blue whale research in the northern Indian Ocean and is internationally known for her blue whale and species protection project Oceanswell. She is a Senior TED Fellow and was selected for a BBC 100 Women Award in 2018 .

life and work

Asha de Vos was born in Sri Lanka and was educated at Ladies' College in Colombo . After high school she moved to Scotland for her undergraduate degree in marine and environmental biology at the University of St Andrews . She then received her Masters in Integrative Biosciences from Oxford University and her PhD from the University of Western Australia . She is the first person from Sri Lanka to do a PhD in marine mammal research.

De Vos worked as a program manager in the Marine and Coastal Unit of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In 2008, she started a blue whale project in Sri Lanka that carried out the first long-term study of blue whales in the northern Indian Ocean. Through its research, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has identified the Sri Lankan blue whales as a population in urgent need of protection and research. The IWC has started to work with the Sri Lankan government on whaling ships. De Vos is an invited member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission's Whale Specialist Group. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Santa Cruz and a visiting blogger at National Geographic .

De Vos is a TED Senior Fellow and Duke University Global Fellow in Marine Conservation, and she was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum . In 2013 she received the President's Award for Scientific Achievement. In 2018 she received the WINGS WorldQuest Women of Discovery Sea Award.

On May 26, 2018, she received the Golden Alumni Award in the “Professional Achievement” category at the first edition of the British Council's Golden Alumni Awards. She was added to the BBC 100 Women list later in the year .
