Asher Brown Durand
Asher Brown Durand (born August 21, 1796 in Jefferson Village, now Maplewood , New Jersey , † September 17, 1886 in Maplewood , New Jersey) was an American painter from the Hudson River School as well as draftsman , engraver and illustrator .
He was the brother of the engraver Cyrus Durand (1787-1868) and the goldsmith and engraver John Durand (1792-1820).
Asher Brown Durand was one of the founders of the National Academy of Design in New York in 1826 , and from 1845 to 1861 he held its presidency. Durand was the first American painter to work before nature.
