Askold , Russian Остров Аскольд , is the name of an island in Russia . It is located in Peter the Great Bay in the Sea of Japan . It is located 6.7 km south of the mainland at Mys Maidelja (Мыс Майделя) and 44 kilometers southeast of Vladivostok .
The island extends for six kilometers from north to south, and is almost as wide. In the south there is a larger indentation, 1800 meters wide and 1600 meters deep, the Najesdnik Bay (Buchta Najesdnik, Бухта Наездник).
At the southern tip of Mys Jelagina (Мыс Елагина) there is a lighthouse .
Administratively, the island belongs to the Shkotovsky Raion ( Шкотовский Район ) of the Primorye Region in the Far East Federal District .
