On the former Sudanese Nile island of Askut ( ancient Egyptian Djer-Setiu ) there was an ancient Egyptian fortress in the Middle Kingdom , which was built to secure the border with Nubia . Since the completion of the Aswan Dam , the island has been flooded by Lake Nubia .

The fortress, about 351 kilometers south of Aswan and Sesostris III. erected, was in the area of the second Nile cataract and had a size of 77 × 87 meters. The protective wall was 5.3 meters thick and protruded like a spur with the bastions . The heavily fortified entrance area protected a temple and warehouses at the port.
