Location of Assam in India

The Assam conflict is an uprising in the Indian state of Assam .

The conflict started in the 1970s. The main causes are the economic backwardness of the northeast region of India and the tensions between Assamese and Bengal . The Bengalis, who already held leading positions in colonial times, have secured leading positions in the economy. In addition, many Bengalis immigrated from Bangladesh. The Assamese see themselves at a disadvantage and accuse the Indian government of exploiting resources, particularly tea and oil.

The conflict escalated due to terrorist uprisings by militant Assamese groups and corresponding reactions by the Indian security forces. The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), which fights for an independent, socialist Assam, is considered the strongest of these groups .
