Assaroe Abbey ( Irish Mainistir Eas Aodha Ruaidh ; Samarium) is a former Cistercian abbey in County Donegal in what is now the Republic of Ireland . It is located about 1 km from Ballyshannon at the height south of the river and above the mouth of the river Erne on Assaroe Lake.

history

The monastery was founded in 1178 by one of the rulers of Tír Conaill , either Roderick O'Cananan or Flaharty O'Muldorry, who died in the abbey in 1197. As a daughter monastery of Boyle Abbey, it belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The Abbot of Assaroe was involved in the Mellifont conspiracy in 1227 and was deposed. The abbot was also deposed in 1268 because he had not attended the General Chapter for 12 years. Donal Mor O'Donnell, King of Tír Conaill, entered the monastery as a monk and was buried there in 1241. The monastery was burned down in 1377 and attacked again in 1388 after it was considered an O'Donnell base. In 1398 it was looted again. After the monastery was dissolved in the Tudor period , the monks stayed until 1597, although the monastery property had already been lent to English masters. The area of the monastery is now occupied by a cemetery and a rural property.

Here are also the Assaroe Falls, waterfalls that have lost their power due to the electricity works on the Erne.

Buildings and plant

The west end of the church with part of the south wall has been preserved.
