Hypericum mexicanum is a sticky shrub that reaches a height of between 40 and 80 centimeters. The trunk is erect and usually branches upwards at angles between 16 ° and 45 °. The cross-opposite leaves are sessile. The egg-shaped and flat with an obtuse-angled tip leaf blade is about 7.5 to 13 millimeters long and 3.2 to 7.1 millimeters wide. The leaf surface is dotted and has a radiating vein. The central axis is clearly visible on the underside of the basal and incomplete leaf.

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry . The oval and vice versa lanceolate sepals measure 4.4 to 6 millimeters in length and 2 to 3.6 millimeters in width. Its tip is acute to obtuse angled and there are numerous transparent points on its surface. The slightly sloping and obtuse-angled petals are between one and 1.3 millimeters long and 0.4 to 0.8 millimeters wide. The ovary is between 3 and 4 millimeters in size, with the stylus on top measuring 5 millimeters. The scar is disc-shaped. The fruits reach sizes between 4.4 and 5.2 millimeters. The flowering period extends from May to August, followed by fruit ripening from November to February.
