Assaye is a community in India .

Geography and history

Assaye belongs to the Jalna district in Maharashtra state . It is located about 72 km northeast of the city of Aurangabad . Highway 178 runs in the north and runs from Kannad in the west via Sillod to Deulgaon Raja in the southeast. The city of Jalna is located south of the village . The village was the site of the 1803 Battle of Assaye , a skirmish between the Marathas and Britain under Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington . The battle ended in a victory for the British. One volume from Bernard Cornwell's series of novels about the sniper Richard Sharpe deals with the battle of 1803.
