The Asseburg is a defunct ring wall in Wassel in Lower Saxony .

description

The remains of a circular rampart can be found on the southwestern outskirts of Wassel. On historical maps of the Kurhannoverschen Landesaufnahme from 1781 the place is shown as a completely preserved oval ring wall. The leveling of the wall began around 1860. In 1895 the facility was described as a ring-shaped earth wall. The wall with a ditch in front was 15 m wide and about 2.5 m high at that time. In 1901 only a 30 m long piece of rampart was left, and there was no longer any interest in preserving it. In 1924, as a result of agricultural plowing, extensive leveling was found. The first aerial photos of the facility were taken in 1934. Since then, the object has been regularly explored by aerial archeology .

The remnants of the wall, which are still up to 1 m high, lie on a field and can still be seen as bumps in the ground despite leveling by plowing over them. On photos of the aerial archeology from 1979, the facility is clearly recognizable by the dark color of the ditch and the wall. The former hill fort has a diameter of about 70 m. Since no archaeological investigation has yet been carried out, nothing is known about its structure, its construction and time of use. Due to similar systems in the wider area ( Heisterburg , Heeßel Castle ), it can be assumed that it was built in the early to high Middle Ages .

history

The Asseburg could be related to the noble family von Wassel, which died out with Konrad II von Wassel in the 12th century. As early as 1458, an Artborch was mentioned as a fiefdom of the Hildesheim bishops to the Lords of Gleidingen .
