Jean Owen (born November 17, 1943 in Liverpool , England ), known under the stage name Samantha Jones , is an English singer. She had her greatest solo successes in Belgium and the Netherlands in the early 1970s , where she won several awards. Bruce Eder compared to Allmusic with Dusty Springfield and Darlene Love .

life and work

Jean Owen began her musical career in 1961 in the singing group "The Vernons Girls", which had some hits in the early 1960s. From 1964 she appeared solo as Samatha Jones. Her single "Don't Come Any Closer" from 1965 was covered in the same year by Françoise Hardy under the French title "Ce n'est pas un rêve". In 1967 Samantha Jones starred in "The Real Me" and "Where Are the Men" on the soundtrack of the film Die Rache des Dr. Fu Man Chu involved. The track "Surrounded By A Ray Of Sunshine" (1967) later experienced a renaissance in the Northern Soul club scene. Her first album Call It Samantha was released only in the United States in 1968 .

The second album A Girl Named Sam (1969) was produced by Mark Wirtz . With the title "Today (Without You)" Samantha Jones won the RTL Grand Prix in October 1969 and entered the Belgian and Dutch charts . The following year she won the music festival in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, with her version of My Way . "My Way" became a hit in Holland and appeared almost two decades later (1988) on the album World Stars - 28 Greatest Artists Of The World .

In Germany, Samantha Jones appeared in the disco show on June 5, 1971 with the title Sweet inspiration . Over time she gained a good reputation as a revue singer and performed mainly on cruise ships. In the mid-1980s she started working as a producer of music shows.
