Assen Karastoyanov

Assen Pavlov Karastoyanov ( Bulgarian Асен Павлов Карастоянов , alternative transcription Asen Karastoyanov; born June 3, 1893 in Samokow , † September 8, 1976 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian composer .

Karastojanow studied flute at the National Music Academy in Sofia and continued his training in Berlin with Paul Juon . Between 1923 and 1929 he directed orchestras in Bulgaria. He then studied composition in Paris with Paul Dukas at the École Normale de Musique , with Paul Le Flem at the Schola Cantorum and from 1932 with Sigfrid Karg-Elert and Günter Raphael at the Leipzig Conservatory . In 1933 he returned to Sofia and taught at his old academy, where he received a full professorship in 1945.

He composed five operettas, two ballets, four symphonies, a Bulgarian rhapsody, symphonic poems, suites, concerts, other orchestral works, chamber music, cantatas, piano pieces and songs, as well as pop and dance music. His operetta Bulgaria in olden times is one of the most frequently performed musical theater works in Bulgaria.
