Assita Kanko
Assita Kanko (born July 14, 1980 in Godyr , Burkina Faso ) is a Belgian non-fiction author and politician of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR, until 2018) and Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (NVA, since 2018). She has been a member of the European Parliament in the Group of European Conservatives and Reformers (ECR) since July 2, 2019 .
Life
Kanko was born in Burkina Faso . At the age of five she became a victim of female genital mutilation , which she later reported in the media and published one of her books in addition to books on feminism . She studied journalism in Burkina Faso and in 2001 went to the Netherlands for an internship . In 2004 she moved to Belgium , where she has lived since then. In 2008 she received Belgian citizenship . From 2011 to 2015 she worked for BNP Paribas in internal communication . She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Belgian Development Agency since 2013 and has been Special Senior Advisor for the Women Political Leaders Global Forum (WPL) since 2017 . She has been writing columns for the daily De Standaard since 2016 .
politics
From October 2012 to October 2018 she was a member of the municipal council for the Mouvement Réformateur (MR) in Ixelles in the Brussels-Capital Region . In 2018 she founded the political incubator Polin , an organization that aims to support women in going into politics. In December 2018, her candidacy for the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (NVA) in the 2019 European elections was announced in second place on the list. Kanko received 85,950 preferential votes and, alongside Geert Bourgeois and Johan Van Overtveldt, a seat in the European Parliament .
In the 9th legislative term beginning July 2, 2019 , she became a full member of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee , the Human Rights Subcommittee and the Delegation for Relations with the United States, and an alternate member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the subcommittee for Security and Defense for the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).
She was elected by her group, chaired by Ryszard Legutko and Raffaele Fitto, as a vice-chair.
