An Astana is a place of worship for a dignitary or saint, especially in Sufism ( Sufis ) and the Twelve Shiites . Astanas are often places of pilgrimage for devout Muslims and places of ritual worship for the person buried there. Other smaller grave structures are often grouped around important Astana tombs.

The word, known from the Kazakh capital, means “capital” in Kazakh and Uyghur , but comes from Persian (from the verb īstādan (ایستادن): “stand / stop” (respectful)) and literally means “threshold” (royal or sacred, at which someone stops out of respect or awe), which includes the seat of the court (the capital) or the place where the body of a holy person is buried (shrine).

The city of Turkestan in Kazakhstan , where the great Sufi - poet and Founder Khoja Ahmed Yesevi is buried ( Mausoleum ) is also called "Astana", as well as the city of Mashhad in Iran , the burial place of the eighth Shiite Imam Reza is long. before the new capital of Kazakhstan ( Nur-Sultan (until 2019 Astana) ) became the capital, it was "an Astana", i.
