Astatotilapia flaviijosephi is a species of cichlid found in the Middle East , in the Jordan River Basinand in the vicinity of the Sea of Galilee .

features

Astatotilapia flaviijosephi becomes a maximum of 13 cm long, but most specimens remain smaller. The head takes up 33 to 39% of the standard length . The body height is around 34.5 to 36.9% of the standard length. Males grow faster and get bigger. Their caudal fin is slightly larger, while the dorsal and anal fin are significantly larger. There are three rows of teeth in both jaws. Most of the teeth in the outer rows are two-pointed, less often one or three-pointed. The lower pharyngealia has a central row of large molar-like teeth. On the lower branch of the first gill arch there are 7 to 9 gill rakes . The fish are light brown-gray to olive-gray in color and show three interrupted dark longitudinal stripes and about 10 gray-brown transverse bars on the sides of the body. During the breeding season, the male's longitudinal stripes and crossbars turn dark blue-black. The abdominal region shimmers silvery. The pelvic fins are dark gray. There are two to nine egg spots on the anal fin of the males.

Way of life

Astatotilapia flaviijosephi lives in the shallow water of lakes, ponds and rivers between stones and plants. Females feed mainly on mosquito larvae , little bristles and amphipods , while the larger males mainly eat snails. The fish are mouthbrooders in which the female takes the eggs in her mouth. The fry swim freely with a length of 8 to 9 mm. The breeding season is in April, May and June.

Systematics

The fish species was described in 1883 by the French naturalist Louis Lortet under the name Chromis flaviijosephi and named after the Roman-Jewish historian Flavius Josephus . The species was later assigned to the genus Astatotilapia , which is not a Monophylum . Astatotilapia flaviijosephi belongs to the family of the "Lake Victoria region super flocks," meaning the Cichlidenradiation that in Victoria , in Lake Kivu , in Lake Albert , in Lake Edward , in Lake George , the Lake Kyoga , in Turkana , in the Lake Rukwa and lake nabugabo occurs and most of Genus Haplochromis is assigned.
