Astra Linux is a Russian Linux distribution based on Debian which was specially developed for the requirements of the Russian armed forces , other armed forces and intelligence services .

It offers data protection up to the Russian level of secrecy Особой важности Osoboj washnosti , which is equivalent to the German "Top Secret". It has been officially certified by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation , the FSTEC and the Russian Federation Domestic Intelligence Service ( FSB ).

In 2015, plans began to replace foreign software from technology companies such as Microsoft and Apple with Astra Linux . All government agencies and major companies for Russia are said to be affected by this ban. In December 2018 it became public that this plan would be extended until 2030 at the latest.
