Astrid Berwald

Astrid Maria Beatrice Berwald (born September 8, 1886 in Stockholm ; † January 16, 1982 there ) was a Swedish pianist and music teacher.

life and work

Berwald was a student of Richard Andersson in Stockholm and Ernst von Dohnányi at the music academy in Berlin.

Berwald worked until 1966 as director and teacher at the Richard Andersson Music School in Stockholm. Together with the violinist Lotti Andréason and the cellist Carin de Frumerie, she formed the Berwald Trio . She ended her participation in this trio in 1967.

"As a pedagogue, Astrid Berwald followed the old and strict German tradition, but also passed on to her students the skills that she had received from her grandfather, the composer Franz Berwald."

Since 1935 Berwald was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music .

Personal

Berwald was the granddaughter of the Swedish composer Franz Berwald . Her father was the civil engineer and university professor Hjalmar Berwald , who also composed in his spare time.
