At-Tayyib Salih

At-Tayyib Salih , Arabic الطيب صالح, DMG aṭ-Ṭaiyib Ṣāliḥ , also Tayeb Salih, Tajjib Salich, Tajjeb Salech , (born July 12, 1928 in ad-Dabba , Merowe district, Sudan ; † February 18, 2009 in London ) was a Sudanese writer.

Life

He studied at the University of Khartoum and initially worked as a teacher. He later studied international relations in London . At times he was employed in the Arab department of the BBC London. Salih was Director General of the Ministry of Information in Qatar . Since 1999, he has held various positions at UNESCO in Paris, most recently as its representative in the Persian Gulf states .

At-Tayyib Salih was the most important modern Arabic writer from Sudan. A central theme of his work is the crossing of cultural boundaries between traditional Sudanese and Western culture. In his most famous work, Mawsim al-Hiğra ilā al-Šimāl (1967, German: “Zeit der Nordwanderung”), such a border crossing is told using the example of the fate of a Sudanese student in Great Britain. Hiğra , which is simply translated as “north migration” in the title, has the deeper meaning of “to go into exile” in Arabic, because it denotes the emigration of the Prophet from Mecca to Medina. In Bandarschah , too , traditional village life with its changes is contrasted with western modernity.
