iz3w is the name of the 3rd world information center in Freiburg im Breisgau . This emerged from Aktion 3. Welt (ADW) founded in 1968 .

Focus and history

The information center 3rd world has several focal points. One of the main activities is the publication of the eponymous magazine iz3w (formerly: sheets of the information center 3rd world ). The iz3w has been published since 1970 , making it one of the oldest independent development policy journals in Germany alongside afrika süd (Bonn) . It is available in libraries, some bookstores, train station bookstores and third world shops in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and can also be ordered online. Six issues of the magazine appear annually (eight until 2007). The focus of the magazine is on topics such as globalization , racism , development policy and ecology and also illuminates media and cultural policy aspects. These and other topics are analyzed in the light of the relationship between North and South, because despite all the recent shifts, this continues to be a pivotal point of political, economic and cultural developments.

The iz3w in no way sees itself as a "neutral" source for information and analyzes on world events. Rather, she criticizes the order of a world that she does not consider to be the best of all conceivable - a world that has created enough material opportunities to guarantee a reasonable life for all people, but instead of which billions are still in misery and oppression today Life. It does not want to come to terms with conditions that are only comfortable for a small part of the world's population, while at the same time the marginalization of people who have become superfluous and useless for capitalism continues. The regional and global differences between the losers and winners of the existing world order are still particularly evident in the relationships between North and South. But they are more and more obscured by harmonizing terms such as “ one world ”, “ multiculturalism ”, “opportunities in the world market”, “universality of democracy and human rights” or “international networking” and “civil society”.

The magazine is a cooperation partner of the Internet portal Linksnet .

Another focus is the collection of magazines, newspapers and brochures, which are accessible to the public in an archive . The archive is part of the "Cooperation Countries Archive - Archiv³ ". The FernWeh project - Forum Tourism & Criticism - has existed at iz3w since 1998 . It deals with third world tourism, its social, economic and ecological consequences and the view of the “foreign”. The freiburg-postkolonial.de project has been working since the end of 2005, which is dedicated to coming to terms with local colonial history, but also provides numerous general background texts on German colonialism and later developments in the former colonies.

In addition, the fernsicht project (formerly AG Education) has been offering project days on iz3w topics at schools and youth education institutions since 2008. So far there have been project days on the topics of “Respect! Human Rights ”,“ No War - Women and Youth in War and for Peace ”and“ Make it Happen - Realities of Life in South Africa beyond the World Cup ”.

Books and special editions are published in loose order . Further, for example, readings with writers and writers of Asia , Latin America and from Africa initiated.

The iz3w is financed by the proceeds from the sale of the magazine, donations and grants from foundations and other donors.
