One world is a term used in development policy and from the field of development aid work , which, in contrast to the term “ third world ”, stands for a new understanding of development cooperation.

history

The Christian one world idea

The Christian idea of one world was already expressed in the speeches by Martin Niemöller , which were published in 1964 under the title “One World or No World”. Since “the non-white races and peoples are pushing forward”, humanity can only live “with one another”, “in common and mutual responsibility ” and “in real and unconditional solidarity ”. Niemöller recalls Psalm 133, which begins with the words: "See how fine and lovely it is that brothers live together in harmony". This psalm could awaken the longing for a "peace among nations in which all forces come together for common service for the whole of humanity".

Niemöller foresaw that the division of the “white world” into a “free” and a “ communist ” world would not remain the main problem, as the “colored world” would become increasingly important thanks to the population explosion as well as economic and technical developments.

From the third world to the one world

Division of the world into blocks
First world blue, second world red, third world green

After World War II , the world was divided into three blocks. The “First World” were the developed countries of Western Europe , North America and Australia , also often called “ industrialized nations ”. The “ Second World ” were the communist countries like the former USSR , the People's Republic of China , the GDR , North Korea , North Vietnam , Cuba etc. The “Third World”, on the other hand, were the non-aligned countries.

In the 1960s the movement of the non-aligned states emerged , which primarily rejected this political block division of the world and pursued its own goals. Members included the then Yugoslavia, Egypt and India.

This notion as a term was increasingly criticized and rejected in the early 1970s under Erhard Eppler ( SPD ) as development aid minister in Willy Brandt's government and various development aid organizations. In view of the threat of worldwide nuclear destruction , globalization , environmental destruction and the colonial past , one can no longer speak of individual, separate worlds. This idea would not do justice to reality and, despite all the differences, the shared responsibility for the world itself.

example

The enormous meat consumption in the so-called developed countries, which must be covered by additional South American meat imports, was cited as examples of overarching economic ties and responsibility. In order to produce one kilogram of beef in South America , many times the weight of grain would be wasted as fodder that would be available to people in so-called underdeveloped countries if more meat were to be avoided.

term

The term “one world” should also symbolize this rethinking of the previous conservative development policy and emphasize equal rights in dealing with one another as partners. This thought was also expressed in the terms “Help through self-help” and “Think globally, act locally”.

Most noticeably, this change took place in the “Third World” stores, which were increasingly being renamed “One World” stores. At the latest with the dissolution of the USSR in the 1990s , the term “Third World” is considered politically outdated and out of date, since the “Second World” no longer exists as a bloc. Accordingly, one no longer speaks of “development aid”, but of “development cooperation”.

At the same time, the term "one world" reminds us that there is only one earth that needs to be preserved. In its new meaning it has also found a certain entrance into other languages, e.g. B. English (One World) and Esperanto (unu mondo).

aims

Goals in understanding a world are:

  • Development cooperation with partner organizations in countries in the South
  • Support for emancipation and human rights movements
  • Development policy and intercultural educational work
  • Promotion of fair trade in so-called world shops
  • Self-help by migrants and refugees from countries in the south

Internet

In the German-speaking Internet, the term “One World” is often used in connection with development projects. In other languages there is no similar connection between the corresponding term (One World etc.) and development policy issues. Various German-language portals, blogs and websites refer to the term in their project name, e.g. For example, the school competition of the Federal President One World for All , the One World Internet Conference , the event series One World One Future , the portal A World Information , the Mission One World , the blog A world a future and the One World Network NRW .

Quotes

“The world has changed dramatically in recent years. States fall apart, new borders emerge. On the other hand, the term “One World” is a matter of course. But behind this is a claim that we have not yet lived up to. To do this, we must give development policy a new national and international priority; because it is she who takes on the central questions of our future. "

"The Third World is not a reality, it is ideology"
