Statuette ( Ptolemaic period ): Atef crown of Osiris ( Louvre ) |
The Atef crown (also bundle crown ) has been documented as an ancient Egyptian insignia since the Old Kingdom (2707–2216 BC).
Mythological connections
In ancient Egypt, the Atef crown was the symbol of rule of various kings ( pharaohs ) and deities, for example from Khnum , Osiris , Horus and the Horus child . The Book of the Dead says that Osiris received the Atef crown as a sign of his earthly rule. Since the Atef crown also symbolized the rule over Upper and Lower Egypt , it could also replace the double crown on certain occasions .
The Atef is known as "bundles crown" in its basic equipment a combination of the white crown of the South , each having a Maat - ostrich feather on each side, optionally complemented with two ram horns or, since the New Kingdom , with uraei and sun discs . It is very similar in structure and appearance to the Osiris crown .
