The Athénée de Luxembourg , also known as Kolléisch , is a secondary school in Luxembourg City in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

Jesuit Church and College 1686

history

The school was founded in 1603 as a Jesuit college . After the abolition of the Jesuit order by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria (Luxembourg was part of the Austrian Netherlands at the time ) ordered the order to be banned in her sphere of influence; the school was renamed the Royal College ("Theresianum") and the Jesuits were replaced by secular teachers (who were nevertheless often priests).

When the fortress of Luxembourg was occupied by French revolutionary troops in 1794, the school was closed. The buildings served initially as a prison, later as a depot, barracks and finally as a military hospital. In French times, Luxembourg was part of the Département des Forêts ; the administration founded a new Ecole centrale in 1802 , which was converted into an Ecole secondaire in 1803/1804 and moved into the buildings of the former college in 1805. In 1808 the name was changed again to Collège Communal .

After the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg regained independence through the Congress of Vienna in 1815 , the school was again converted into Athénée Royal (Royal Athenaeum) in 1817 . In the course of the 19th century, the school's orientation was changed again and again through several reforms, including scientific, medical and philosophical branches; In 1892 a school for economics and industry was split off from the Athenaeum.

After the occupation by Nazi Germany in 1940, the school was renamed the Athenaeum and converted into a grammar school with a high school for boys ; after the liberation, the previous state was restored and the school was now renamed Athénée Grand-Ducal .

In 1964 the school moved from the buildings erected at the beginning of the 17th century in the old town of Luxembourg to new buildings outside the city center. As a result, other schools moved there and formed the Geesseknäppchen campus . In 1968, as part of a school reform, general co-education was introduced. Today around 1,300 students attend the Kolléisch .

At the beginning of the 2000s, the building from 1964 turned out to be too small. Plus, it had been in need of renovation for years. In June 2011, construction began on a temporary facility, which was completed in 2012 and has been in use since the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. The building, which impresses with its strikingly colored exterior facade , was designed by the architects Bruck + Weckerle Architekten .

The building from 1964 has been renovated since 2013. Among other things, new classrooms are to be created, accessibility for people with disabilities improved, the sanitary facilities completely renewed and the outside area completely redesigned. In addition, the energy efficiency and fire protection measures are to be adapted to the current standards .
