Athanase Matti Shaba Matoka (born June 20, 1930 in Bartelli ) is retired Archbishop of Baghdad .

Life

Athanase Matti Shaba Matoka was ordained a priest on October 17, 1954 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Dara dei Siri and auxiliary bishop in Baghdad on August 25, 1979 .

He was ordained bishop on December 8th of the same year by the Patriarch of Antioch , Ignatius Antoine II. Hayek ; Co- consecrators were Cyrille Emmanuel Benni , Archbishop of Mosul , and Joseph Jacob Abiad , Archbishop of Homs .

On July 15, 1983, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Baghdad. Pope Benedict XVI On March 1, 2011, he accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.
