Athanasios Argianas (* 1976 in Athens ) is a Greek-British artist. His work includes sculpture , painting , text and performance , through which he explores the possibilities and limits of the transformation of language through media .

life and work

Argianas was born in Athens. He studied with Jannis Kounellis at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf , graduating in 2005 from Goldsmiths College in London. In addition to training in fine arts, he was at the music college and published music under the name Gavouna. In his work he sometimes refers to electronic musical instruments of the early 20th century such as the theremin or the Ondes Martenot , experimental music and compositional methods of the 1960s. Other influences are the concrete poetry , the constructivism Naum Gabo and Marcel Duchamp in 1920 with its circular development of language. He lives in London .

Argiana's work explores the contingency of tone and form. It asks about the possibility of a new or different form of communication that can arise through the dialogue between auditory and material experience. To decode sounds he uses standardized, numerical methods, but mostly he works intuitively. His goal is not to transfer one medium true to the original into another, rather it should lie in between, in order to be able to uncover new ideas.

Describing his work “A Sequencer *” from his 2013 exhibition, he explains:

“We often have to create parables or myths to understand concepts that are not intuitively graspable within the power and conventions of language. They become metaphors we use as tools like shadows in a cave. The most radical ideas of this century –– those that completely overturn our perceptions of the world–– usually come from physics. Surely, it's an uncomfortable situation to deal with: the idea that you're not going to have finite answers, that everything is an approximation of something else, and that there are no certainties. I try to keep my choices open outside of myself –– to let other factors decide for me –– and to embrace contingency. "
