Athelston Gaston

Athelston Gaston (born April 24, 1838 in Castile , Wyoming County , New York , †  September 23, 1907 in Québec , Canada ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1901 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Athelston Gaston attended public schools in his homeland. In 1854 he moved with his parents to Crawford County , Pennsylvania. Until 1873 he worked in agriculture; then he worked in the wood industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1891 and 1895 he was mayor of the city of Meadville .

In the congressional election of 1898 Gaston was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 26th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican John Cirby Sturtevant on March 4, 1899 . Since he was not re-elected in 1900, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1901 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Gaston returned to the wood industry. He was accidentally killed on September 23, 1907 during a hunting excursion in the northern part of the Canadian province of Quebec and buried in Meadville.
