John Cirby Sturtevant

John Cirby Sturtevant (born February 20, 1835 in Spring , Crawford County , Pennsylvania , †  December 20, 1912 in Conneautville , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Sturtevant attended the public schools in his home country and then worked as a teacher and farmer. In 1861, 1862, and 1864 he served in the administration of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1865 and 1890 he participated as a delegate at all regional party conventions of the Republicans for Pennsylvania. In 1865 and 1866 he was a member of the state parliament. In 1867 he moved to Conneautville, where he worked in the hardware store until 1873. Then he worked in the craft until 1888. He then went into the banking industry, where he was president of the First National Bank of Conneautville .

In the congressional election of 1896 , Sturtevant was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 26th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Matthew Griswold on March 4, 1897 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1898, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1899 . This was shaped by the events of the Spanish-American War of 1898 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Sturtevant returned to the banking industry. He died on December 20, 1912 in Conneautville, where he was also buried.
