The Athoracophoridae are a family of nudibranchs from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). It is the only family of the superfamily Athoracophoroidee . The family or superfamily contains almost 40 species.

features

The housings are largely reduced. The phylogenetic remainder consists of a lime platelet or of numerous, small lime bodies that are completely enclosed by the mantle. The body is worm-shaped, the mantle is limited to a small area in the front part of the body. This area is bordered by pits. The anal opening is located on the side of the jacket or within the jacket field. Numerous diverticula extend radially from the lung cavity . The sole is divided into three parts lengthways. The front and lower tentacles are reduced. The penis does not have a flagellum in the genital system.

Geographical occurrence and way of life

The representatives of the superfamily Athoracophoroidea or the family Athoracophoridae come from New Guinea, via Eastern Australia, the islands of the Bismarck Archipelago, the Admiralty Islands , Vanuatu (New Hebrides), New Caledonia to New Zealand including Chatham Island . Little is known about the way of life of many species. The species of the genus Athoracophorus are nocturnal, live mainly on trees and eat mushrooms.

Systematics

The only family Athoracophoridae of the superfamily Athoracophoroidea is divided into two subfamilies by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005). Schileyko (2007), however, does not adopt this subfamily structure.
